An early morning fire in Clearwater destroyed a home on Maple Street and killed the family's three adult dogs and six puppies.
The two people living in the home were able to escape without injuries, Clearwater Fire and Rescue said.
Just before 4:12 a.m. today, the occupants woke up and smelled smoke. While they were able to get out, the fire spread too fast to rescue their dogs.
The house at 1616 Maple St. was engulfed in flames when fire units arrived and firefighters concentrated on keeping the blaze from spreading to neighboring homes, fire rescue said.
The fire destroyed the house and damage is estimated at $300,000.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing, but the fire department said it appears to have sparked in the attic and could have started from an electrical problem.
A total of 30 firefighters responded with 10 pieces of equipment.
The fire department did not have information about the ages or breed of dogs that died.
