Black Ties And Guayaberas
The Tampa General Hospital Foundation hosted its 11th annual Moments in Time Gala on May 10 at the Hyatt Regency Tampa. Using a 1950s Havana nightclub theme, the event attracted about 400 guests, and a pre-gala VIP cocktail party was open to about 300 patrons. Attire ranged from black tie to guayabera shirts and Panama hats. Big-band sounds and a cabaret floor show rounded out the entertainment. The gala benefited TGH's Fund for the Future. The event chairwoman was Mary Jane Campbell.
Cancer Group Selects Man, Woman Of Year
Patrick Turner and Brooke Palmer were chosen as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Man & Woman of the Year at a gala May 10 at TPepin's Hospitality Centre. The pair was selected for raising the most money during a 10-week fundraising contest. Turner raised $22,243 and Palmer raised $53,611. In all, the competition brought in $232,000 for cancer research. Also honored was 13-year-old cancer patient Patrick Pedraja as Boy of the Year. He and his family went on a cross-country trip to raise awareness of the need for bone marrow donors. Samantha Lee, an 8-year-old cancer patient was named Girl of the Year. She is involved in the Bravery Beads project, in which child cancer patients receive a necklace with his or her name on it and beads as each treatment is completed.
Junior League Ends Year With Annual Dinner
The Junior League of Tampa presented Laura Bentley with its Lifetime Commitment Award at the league's annual dinner May 6 at the Tampa Marriott Waterside. Bentley has been a member of the Junior League for 50 years. Frannie Reynolds was named Sustainer of the Year. Outgoing league president Susan Touchton passed the gavel to Jennifer Johnson. New active members also were recognized.
Confiscated Items Make It To Gala Auction
The Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office hosted its fourth annual Night of a Thousand Thieves on May 9 at the Tampa Garden Club. The event raised $50,000 to benefit DACCO's substance-abuse services. An auction featured items seized during drug raids by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Mary Lynn Ulrey, DACCO's chief executive officer, spoke about plans for a treatment center to serve single moms that will allow their children to be with them. The Dr. Thomas E. McKell Award was presented by board of trustees chairman Susan Casper to state Sen. Arthenia Joyner for her contributions in working against substance abuse.
