BOCA GRANDE - Rescue crews resumed the search for a 67-year-old diver Sunday and had not found him by the time the search was called off at 8 p.m.
Dean Witt of Arcadia went missing Saturday about five miles offshore in the area of Gasparilla Sound. He had been with a group on a scuba diving excursion on a 27-foot vessel from Legacy Dive Charters of Southwest Florida. Witt had surfaced from a dive about noon while the charter vessel was retrieving another diver. When the boat went to pick him up, he had disappeared, the Coast Guard said.
Witt was wearing a black and blue wet suit, yellow fins and an air tank.
Several local and state agencies including the Coast Guard and Charlotte County Sheriff's Office have been involved in the search.
