Rough Surf In Gulf Leaves 2 Swimmers In Critical Condition

LONGBOAT KEY - Two swimmers were unconscious as bystanders dragged them out of the Gulf of Mexico at about 5 p.m. today.
Both men appeared to be in critical condition, said Longboat Key Police Chief Al Hogle.
The men had been swimming in the Gulf near the Sarasota-Manatee county line when they were overtaken by rough surf, witnesses said.
Longboat police did not immediately release the identity of the men, who were taken by ambulance for treatment.
