Sarasota County announced today a new tobacco-free hiring policy.
To be considered for a county job, applicants will have to indicate that they have not used any tobacco products in the preceding year, according to a county news release.
Prospective employees will also be screened for tobacco use during the physical examination for new hires, and any applicant with nicotine above a "specified amount" in his or her system will be disqualified for employment, the news release says.
The new policy will encourage county workers to have healthier lifestyles and to keep the county from incurring higher insurance costs because of tobacco-related claims, the release says.
