"Matlock: The Chef," 9 a.m. today, WGN
This episode of "Matlock" was made in 1987 - long before the Food Network and Bravo started popping out celebrity chefs like Pez candies. It features a real-life celebrity food writer, the late Craig Claiborne. Matlock defends a TV cooking-show hostess charged with murdering her ex-husband (Claiborne), a guest on her show. The mind reels with the possibilities for a remake.
"Wolfgang Puck," 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. today, Fine Living
Chef Puck goes on a tour of the Anchor Brewing Co. in San Francisco and talks about pairing gourmet cuisine with quality beer. That's beer with beef goulash, beer with German spaetzle and beer with spicy chicken pizza. Hic.
"American Eats: Canned Food," 2 p.m. Sunday, History
Did you know the can opener was invented 50 years after the British first packed their food into cans? Bit of an oversight, that. This timely look at the history behind canned foods comes just as we prepare, once again, to pack the pantry for hurricane season.
"Big Mac: Inside the McDonald's Empire," 9 a.m. Monday, CNBC
CNBC correspondent Carl Quintanilla gets an exclusive tour of the fast-food chain's test kitchens, meets the head chef and learns the secrets behind McDonald's "secret sauce." Frankly, we'd prefer to know the secrets behind Mayor McCheese, but Mrs. McCheese apparently has decided to stand by her burger.
