This is the second season that Dunkin' Donuts has given away a free doughnut on the day after each win by the Tampa Bay Rays. That probably seemed like a safe marketing bet in 2007, when the team won only 66 games out of 162.
But this year, with the Rays one of the hottest teams in the majors and fighting for first place in the American League East division, it's a different story. I checked with Dunkin' spokesman Toby Srebnik to assess the damage.
"As of May 16, they were on pace to win 96 games, which would be a substantial increase in free doughnuts over last season (and would make a lot of Red Sox and Yankees fans mad)," Srebnik e-mailed to me.
As of Friday, franchisees had given away approximately 76,800 doughnuts after Rays wins this year, or about 3,200 per win.
