NUKE THAT PIE
Microwave ovens usually turn the texture of bread into something akin to a baseball glove. Tough. Chewy. Disgusting. Which explains why we were surprised to find that the new California Pizza Kitchen Sicilian-style thin-crust pizza serving for one tasted like, well, pizza. We're very much in favor of food that tastes like it should. We tried the DiGiorno version, too, but liked CPK's better. Cost: $3.29.
SMELLS A LITTLE LIKE ALMONDS
You know how it is; You're eating some almonds and you're thinking, "I wish this tasted like cocoa." Us, too. Good thing Emerald is dusting its roasted almonds in a dark-chocolate cocoa flavor. The good news: They're highly addictive. The bad news: They're low-sodium, low-fat, trans fat-free and full of protein and vitamin E. Something this good shouldn't be good for you. Cost $6.69 for an 11-ounce canister.
BENCH PRESS A CAKE
Too many times when we bake a cake, half of it winds up on the counter when we go to slide it on top of another layer. (And by "too many," we mean "every time.") This handy Wilton Cake Lifter is designed to slide beneath a layer so it doesn't buckle and so it can easily shift to the position you want. And it's dishwasher-safe. Cost: $9.99 at Wilton.com.
PEAR-FECT FOR SNACKING
You want something sweet to snack on but don't want to load up on candy. Crispy Green's Pear Crisps are freeze-dried Asian pear slices with no added preservatives, sugar, colors, fat or cholesterol. If you like dried apples, chances are good you'll like these, too. Cost: A six-pack of 0.32-ounce packets are $7.99. Available at Fresh Market.
