TAMPA - As the words came out of Landy Faedo's mouth, a slight chuckle followed.
"It's pretty tough to win them all," Alonso's baseball coach said. Yet Faedo's star pitcher this season, Alex Panteliodis, nearly did.
The Ravens' senior left-hander put together a tremendous run during his high school career, one that included a win in 20 consecutive decisions between his freshman and senior seasons. Panteliodis was one of the area's most dominant pitchers the last two seasons, compiling a 20-2 record during that time. As a senior, he was 9-2 with a 2.37 ERA.
But Panteliodis' contributions didn't end there. He also was one of the Ravens' top bats. As a senior, he hit .382 with six doubles, four home runs and 16 RBIs.
Panteliodis' accolades throughout his high school career include all-county honors, all-state honors and twice being named to the Saladino all-tournament team. It was his all-around effort as a senior that led him to collecting an additional accolade as the Tribune's Hillsborough County Baseball Athlete of the Year.
"It's a great luxury to have guys like him," Faedo said. "He's not only a quality baseball player, but a quality person."
Faedo described Panteliodis as a tireless worker, one who often strived for perfection. More often than not, the work ethic paid dividends. When Panteliodis took the mound, a quality start followed. And when he was in the field or at the plate, he was a contributor, never a liability.
"He was always very determined to do well," Faedo said, "and he was always very efficient."
Unfortunately, Panteliodis' career ended in disappointment, as did the Ravens' season. A team that was expected to make a run at a Class 6A state title, Alonso fell in the district semifinals on its home field, failing to make the playoffs. Panteliodis took the loss in the game.
But Faedo doesn't believe the ending will be what defines Panteliodis in the long run. Instead, the coach believes people will remember the entire body of work, which he feels was pretty impressive.
"I don't think people are going to overlook the success he had because of the end of the year," Faedo said. "Everyone in the county and state knows he's a quality pitcher and a quality player. I think that's what people will remember."
