CLEARWATER - An officer who shot and killed a dog in April has been cleared of wrongdoing, the Clearwater Police Department said today.
On April 8, Officer George Phillips, 25, was dispatched to 212 Pegasus Ave. to deal with a parking problem, according to police documents. Once there, Phillips heard a commotion behind him, turned and saw a large full- or mixed-breed chow chow charging him, the documents state.
Phillips yelled at the dog to stop and attempted to retreat to the safety of a house, but after it became apparent the canine wasn't going to stop, he unholstered his gun and shot the dog, the documents say.
Phillips' actions were in keeping with department policy, the documents state.
