TALLAHASSEE -- The last time we saw Florida State quarterback Drew Weatherford on a football field, the fifth-year senior from Land O' Lakes had a bag of ice on his knee and was moving very gingerly.
However, nearly two months after having arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee, Weatherford is almost back to full speed. The injury cost him most of his final spring practice at FSU, but Weatherford said he doesn't expect his knee to hamper him during his final season this fall.
"My knee feels really, really good right now,'' Weatherford said Wednesday, a day after participating in twice-weekly agility drills with his teammates. "It's pretty intense stuff. I'm able to compete out there. I'm doing a lot of stuff. I'm able to run. I'm able to cut on it. When I go really hard one day, the next day it's a little swollen, a little sore.''
After the March 28 surgery, Weatherford took a month "completely off.'' He then started light running, swimming and riding a bike to strengthen the knee.
Other than when the occasional swelling and soreness slows him down, Weatherford isn't holding anything back in preparing for what he hopes to be his best season.
"My strength is back. I didn't have any atrophy at all. So far, so good. I'm really ahead of where I thought I would be. I didn't think I was going to be able to do so much so early.''
Weatherford, who has 33 starts the last three seasons, will enter fall practice as FSU's starting quarterback.
