LAND O' LAKES - After coaching the Hudson wrestling team for 10 seasons, Dana Bentley has resigned.
Bentley coached the only two state champions the school has had in Pat Reili (103) and Robb Philippus (215), both of whom won their titles in 2000.
"Dana's had two state champions over the years. He sent the boys to a lot of tournaments," Hudson athletic director Linda McQuade said. "So we're just going to have to try and find somebody who will really try and develop the same thing and do the tournaments so they can compete at a higher level."
Thus far, Hudson has received two applications on the position, she said.
Wiregrass Ranch has added two more coaches to its list of positions to fill. They're in the process of filling the baseball job, which Kris Parrish resigned from in April as well as the softball job Chris Webb recently retired from.
Additionally, Bulls athletic director David Wilson will have to replace Tammy Shaw, who resigned her position as the cheerleading coach due to her pregnancy. Shaw will remain the tennis coach.
"I think Chris is basically an athletic director's dream," Wilson said. "Everything I needed her to do was done perfect. Paperwork was very organized, I never had to worry about if they had the right paperwork in , if they were going to be there on time. She was very good with the organizing stuff.
"As far as the wins and losses, it's hard to look at if you were successful with wins and losses because they were such a young team. As far as I m concerned, Chris did everything I need her to do."
3 Pasco Soccer Stars Commit To D-II Schools
DADE CITY - Pasco seniors Jose Montelongo, Cody Sumner and Trent Sumner have agreed to offers to continue their soccer careers in college.
Montelongo and Cody Sumner will play for Division II Saint Leo next season, while Trent Sumner is headed to Division II West Florida. Saint Leo confirmed Montelongo has signed a letter-of-intent, and Pirates coach Barry Grayling said he has received confirmation of the other two offers from the schools.
Montelongo ended his prep career as Pasco County's all-time leading scorer, with 143 goals, 48 in the 2007-08 season. He added 16 assists and led Pasco to the regional semifinals.
Lions coach Joel Harrison said despite Montelongo's prolific prep career, the college game likely will be an adjustment for him. His strengths are his ball skills, kick power, accuracy and control.
"It's no different than any other kid - a big transition," Harrison said. "It's going to be a fight. Everyone's going to be faster. But he has a great deal of potential, and is a hard-worker.
"He could play a couple different roles, not just forward. We plan to expose him to some things and see how he handles them."
The biggest thing Montelongo must work on, Harrison said, is his fitness. Because college soccer fields are mostly wider than prep fields, Montelongo will be required to cover more ground at the next level. He did not want to comment on how much playing time Montelongo will get in his first season.
Cody Sumner, a midfielder for Pasco, had eight goals and 13 assists in 2007-08. Together with his brother, Trent, who had three goals and 13 assists, they were responsible for taking the majority of the Pirates' corner kicks, and played key roles on the past three Pasco playoff teams, as did Montelongo.
Earlier in the signing period, Saint Leo received a commitment from Hillsborough County's leading scorer, Bobby Huertas of Freedom, giving the Lions two of the most productive prep forwards in the area.
