Snook Are Prime Release Targets

Published: May 21, 2008

GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Ray Markham.

Brisk tides on this full moon are moving snook closer to the passes and beaches. Water temperatures sitting in the low-80s are about prime for big things to begin happening.

Catch-and-release fishing for snook is something that anglers continue to enjoy. Marine scientists say mortality rates of released snook are very low, which makes snook a prime target for this kind of fishing.

While single-hook lures for artificial baits will reduce injury and assist in the release of fish, baits with trebles can also be used successfully. Regardless of the lure used, crimping barbs on hooks will facilitate a good live release.

Live- and dead-bait fishing for snook is very productive, particularly for large fish, but J-hooks have been shown to increase the mortality rate when anglers fish with these hooks. Circle hooks are an alternative type of terminal tackle that not only catch more fish, but practically eliminate the chance of gut-hooking a fish, making the choice of circle hooks a no-brainer when it comes to catch-and-release fishing. No hook-setting is involved with this style of hook - reeling down on the fish and keeping a tight line will set the hook.

Late afternoon and evening will be the most productive periods to do some snook fishing, right down to the bottom of the tide. Dock lights near passes are beginning to pile up snook. Lights like the Hydro Glow Fish Light are proven attractors for linesiders.

Braided lines testing 20 to 50 pounds with 30- to 40-pound fluorocarbon leaders will provide abrasion resistance to pull larger fish away from pilings for a photo and release.
