TAMPA – A barge offloading fuel caught fire at Port of Tampa early this morning, seriously injuring one crew member.
The barge, named Chemical Trader, was docked at the Citgo bulk storage and distribution facility, 801 McClosky Blvd., just before 2 a.m. when the fire started in a pump room on its deck, Tampa Fire Rescue workers said.
The ship's crew closed the room and used a carbon dioxide gas to put out the flames. The fire was under control about 2:30 a.m., firefighters said.
One crew member, a 49-year-old San Francisco man, had second-degree burns on his face and arms and was taken to Tampa General Hospital. His name was not released.
The barge contains thousands of barrels of diesel fuel, unleaded gas and jet fuel. No fuel leaked into the water, authorities said.
The Coast Guard is investigating.
