MADEIRA BEACH - A spent flare from a fighter jet washed up on the beach here, and the Hillsborough County bomb squad is on its way to dispose of it, sheriff's officials said.
The flare, typical of those used by fighter pilots in training exercises, is emblazoned with the message that it contains phosphorous and should not be handled, said Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jim Bordner.
That is why the bomb squad is responding, he said.
