TAMPA -- The University of Tampa will build a $19.5 million non-denominational chapel with an undisclosed gift from local philathropists John H. and Susan Sykes.
Construction of the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values will begin this summer, university officials announced this afternoon.
The chapel will include a 250-seat main hall, meeting and meditation rooms, pipe organ, a plaza and a 60-bell musical sculpture with a fountain.
The 12,750 square-foot building will be built north of North B Street across from Brevard Hall, where old fairgrounds buildings were recently demolished.
UT officials say a chapel that had been on the third floor of Plant Hall had been converted to academic offices and classroom space.
