Grajales Runner-Up At U.S. Junior Worlds

Eric Grajales fell short of earning his third consecutive berth on the U.S. Junior World Team, losing in the 60-kilogram Greco-Roman division championship match Friday at the Junior World Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Grajales, a wrestling standout at Brandon High, won the challenge bracket with a pair of convincing victories in the morning to move into the overall title match against New York's Kyle Dake. However, Dake won the first two matches of the best-of-three final to earn the spot on the U.S. team for the FILA Junior World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, July 29-Aug.3.

Grajales, the Tribune's Wrestling Athlete of the Year and an undefeated three-time state champion at Brandon, had won Greco-Roman titles at 55 and 50 kilograms, respectively, at the Junior World Team Trials in each of the previous two years.

Grajales still has one big Greco-Roman tournament this summer. He will wrestle in the 55-kilogram Greco-Roman division at the United States Olympic Trials in Las Vegas on June 12.

If Grajales wins the division, he will represent the U.S. at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.

BASKETBALL: Brandon senior and former point guard Tarron Stewart, the second-leading scorer on the Eagles' Class 5A state final four team this past season, has committed to Flagler, a Division II school in St. Augustine.

"Tarron seems really happy about going to Flagler," former Brandon coach Mark Hermann said. "He's getting a full ride."

Stewart, a 6-foot slasher, averaged 16.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists for Brandon, which finished with a 24-5 record.

He was later named a Tribune All-County second-team selection and Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association All-Star.

BASEBALL: Freedom senior outfielder Zac Goodrich has signed with Concordia University-Nebraska, an NAIA program.

Goodrich hit .436 with a team-best 24 hits and added nine RBIs and seven runs scored. He also had a team-high 10 stolen bases.

Also, Gaither senior outfielder Steven Graf and Berkeley Prep senior infielder/outfielder Kevin Rea each will continue their baseball careers at Division II Eckerd College.

Rea was one of the Bucs' offensive leaders as a junior in 2007, when he hit .325 with two home runs, 13 RBIs and 21 runs scored. He had contributed eight RBIs and 13 runs scored this season.

Graf hit .257 with a home run, 18 RBIs and 16 runs scored as a senior with the Cowboys.
