MIAMI - A farmworker advocacy group and Burger King have agreed on a deal to help improve wages and conditions for Florida tomato pickers.
An aide to a U.S. senator who held a hearing on the case announced the deal Friday.
The Miami-based fast-food giant and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers planned to hold a news conference in Washington on the deal that ends a bitter dispute.
Burger King agrees to pay 1.5 cents more per pound of tomatoes it buys from Florida growers, with the money passed to the workers. The coalition also would be able investigate claims of farmworker mistreatment.
The coalition says the raise would roughly double what workers earn while picking.
McDonald's and Taco Bell owner Yum Brands have similar deals. But they are on hold due to resistance from growers.
