LAND O' LAKES - Kicking off the holiday weekend with a kick tonight?
Beginning at 8 p.m. the Florida Highway Patrol will be hosting a DUI checkpoint on U.S. 41 south of Hale Road. Troopers will be working with officers from various agencies to combat driving under the influence and other traffic violators.
If you want to partake in happy hour, have a designated driver, troopers say, rather than risking your life or anyone else's.
In fact, troopers and other law enforcement officers will be stepping up efforts during the 96-hour Memorial Day weekend.
"Vehicle traffic is expected to increase significantly throughout the state during this four-day holiday period," Col. John T. Czernis, director of the highway patrol, said in a news release. "We'll be using all available resources to make Florida roadways safer. We are also reminding motorists to slow down and buckle up. This high visibility enforcement has a single goal in mind: to save lives."
All uniformed troopers, including those who normally have desk jobs, will be patrolling Florida's interstates and major roads over the weekend. Auxiliary and reserve troopers will also be helping out.
Anyone who spots an aggressive or drunken driver on the road, dial *FHP on a cell phone for help. For emergency service, dial 911.
