TAMPA - Hillsborough High School junior DeAnna Marshall hasn't quite adjusted to her role as history-maker. Maybe that will sink in years from now, when she sees her creation fluttering in front of the school.
"Just the thought of driving by school and walking into school and seeing a flag and knowing I made that is kind of like, 'Wow!'" she said.
Marshall, 17, won a $1,000 scholarship for creating the winning design in a school flag contest sponsored by the class of 1958.
"As far as we know, it's the only school flag in the county," said Sandy Ratliff Williams, with the Class of '58 reunion committee.
Judges liked the clean design and the words on the flag - honor, pride, respect and dignity - said art teacher Margaret Watts, who supervised the contest, which drew about 100 students.
Upon graduation, Marshall, who wants to be a pediatrician, plans to attend the University of Central Florida in Orlando or the University of South Florida in Tampa.
"I'm looking forward to getting as many scholarships as possible," she said, "and this definitely helps."
