Meet Storm Team 8

Steve Jerve, chief meteorologist

Jerve attended the University of Minnesota-Morris, earning a degree in speech communication. He has done graduate work in meteorology at Jackson State University and Mississippi State University.

Jerve has worked at stations in Austin, Minn., Jackson, Miss., and Orlando. He spent about eight years covering hurricanes while in Orlando, including Andrew, where he rode out the Category 5 hurricane near the National Hurricane Center in Miami. He then worked in St. Louis and won an Emmy Award in 1996.

Jerve has been chief meteorologist for the Storm Team since 1998. He is a full member of the American Meteorological Society and is a certified broadcast meteorologist.

Jennifer Hill

Hill has a degree in earth sciences and geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a broadcast meteorology degree from Mississippi State University.

Her first job was in Bend, Ore., where she was the main anchor. Then she worked in Asheville, N.C., where she honed her there forecasting snowstorms, severe thunderstorms and hurricanes.

Her favorite part of working with The Storm Team is tracking the daily thunderstorms.

Leigh Spann

Spann joined News Channel 8 in September. She previously worked for stations in Charleston, S.C., and Macon, Ga.

Spann graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in geography and a certificate of atmospheric science.

While living in Charleston, Leigh worked during several hurricanes and tropical storms. Spann holds the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval as well as the National Weather Association Broadcast Seal of Approval.
