After a storm, residents are eager to get their lives back in order. But don't take shortcuts when hiring a contractor. Here are some tips for picking a contractor.
Verify that the contractor is licensed, and check consumer Web sites for past complaints. Unlicensed contractors may solicit door-to-door, provide a post office box instead of a physical address, and ask residents to pull permits.
Request estimates from several companies, including specifics about what work will be done, the materials needed and completion date.
Ask to see proof of insurance.
Never pay in full for work that has not been completed. Some contractors ask for a deposit, which is typically 50 percent or less.
Ask for local references that you can contact.
Know the law. Local building departments can tell you what work requires a permit.
Don't pay with cash. Credit cards often offer fraud protection.
