LITHIA - Newsome's Niko Anthony provided the game's only score with a great special teams play, and the Wolves defense came up with two stops in the final two minutes in a 7-0 victory against Plant City in the second half of a spring jamboree Thursday night at Newsome.
In the first half, Armwood scored touchdowns on its first four possessions and the Hawks defense added another in a 34-0 rout of Durant.
Anthony blocked Plant City's punt attempt on the game's opening possession, scooped it after one bounce and returned it 23 yards for a score. Trent Cornwell had a nice sack, strip and recovery to stop a Plant City drive with 1:16 left, and Gavin Garrow came through with a game-sealing interception of Plant City quarterback Clinton Stearns (9-for-16, 105 yards) with 26 seconds remaining.
Newsome's win spoiled the debut of new Plant City coach Jason Strunk.
"I wanted to see 100 percent hustle for two quarters, get after it and make some plays, and I did see that," Strunk said.
Armwood quarterback Mywan Jackson ran for two scores and threw for two more, and safety Angelo Hadley added an interception return for a touchdown as the Hawks rolled in the other half.
Jackson finished with 188 yards of total offense with two 7-yard touchdown runs and touchdown passes to Sherman Jessie (15 yards) and Dykerius Cross (1 yard).
"We didn't turn the ball over and we lined up right and executed plays, which was good to see," Armwood coach Sean Callahan said.
Durant's offense, which was without running back Ryan Rice (suspended for violation of team policies), committed two turnovers in six possessions.
