Brush Fires Burning In Eastern Polk

Polk County firefighters are battling at least three brush fires today.
About 25 firefighters are on the scene of a 50-acre brush fire near Masterpiece Gardens Road and Mammoth Grove Road, east of Lake Wales tonight. Officials said they expected to be on the scene throughout the night to extinguish several hot spots. No structures are in danger, officials said.
Earlier in the day, a 3-acre brush fire was burning near Toronja Drive and Valencia Drive in Indian Lake Estates South, east of Lake Wales, said spokeswoman Kristin Guira. A lightning strike to a tree is thought to have caused the fire.
The state Division of Forestry used tractor and plow to cut a line around the fire, which threatened a home until it began burning in a different direction, Guira said. Brush piles contained within the fire line will be allowed to burn out.
The Division of Forestry was on the scene of another fire earlier in the day near 630 and State Road 60.
