GAINESVILLE - The dean of the University of Florida's College of Medicine has been relieved of his duties as dean.

An e-mail sent to deans and other department faculty says Bruce Kone will retain a faculty position within the department of medicine in the division of nephrology.

UF spokeswoman Janine Sikes said Thursday that UF President Bernie Machen and Doug Barrett, senior vice president for health affairs, no longer have confidence in Kone's ability to lead the college.
Kone has come under criticism for admitting an applicant to UF's medical school from a politically connected family, even though the student didn't have the backing of the Medical Selection Committee. Kone said the student was exceptional, but the committee indicated the student, Benjamin Mendelsohn, had not taken the Medical College Admission Test.

Kone, 49, came to UF in May 2007 from Houston, where he served as chairman of the department of internal medicine at the University of Texas Medical School.
