Lennard Tops Spoto, Ties Tampa Catholic

RUSKIN - New Lennard football coach George Edington called it one of the better nights in program history.

On Friday, Lennard walked away from its spring jamboree with a 7-0 win against Spoto and a scoreless tie with Class 2A-District 5 opponent and state runner-up Tampa Catholic.

"We needed a confidence builder," Edington said.

Lennard had a chance to go 2-0 in the jamboree when it set up a 32-yard field goal with three seconds remaining against the Crusaders. Unfortunately, the snap was fumbled and the kick fell short as time expired.

"We had our chances to beat those guys," Edington said.

Tampa Catholic was called for pass interference with 1:17 remaining in the game that put Lennard on the 20-yard line. The Longhorns kept the ball on the ground to run out the clock and Edington called a timeout with three seconds left to set up the field goal.

Edington said a rivalry was born.

"They beat us 10-0 last year, but it was at their place for their homecoming," he said. "They have to come to us this year."

"Lennard can have the moral victory," Tampa Catholic coach Bob Henriquez said. "Their kids played hard and our kids didn't play smart."

Against Spoto, quarterback Andrew Burdick found Brandon Stephens for an 18-yard touchdown with 43 seconds remaining and Lennard converted the extra point to earn the win.

"We've struggled with Spoto and against TC we didn't turn the ball over," Edington said. "We turned the ball over five times last year in the jamboree and they beat us 30-0. Hopefully, we'll be able to turn the tables this season."

Tampa Catholic defeated Spoto, 7-0, in the first matchup. Sophomore quarterback Christian Green scored the lone touchdown of the game with a 16-yard run.
