2-Year-Old Run Over By Lawnmower

LAKELAND - A 2-year-old girl was seriously injured Sunday night after she was run over by a lawnmower, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The child was on the front walkway with her grandmother, watching as the grandfather was operating a John Deere riding lawnmower shortly before 6 p.m., sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood said.

The girl ran then toward her grandfather, who was backing up the mower at the home on Poley Lane.

He did not see or hear his granddaughter, Wood said.

The child's right leg was run over and she suffered severe lacerations, Wood said. The girl was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where she remains in serious condition.

The sheriff's office did not release the name of the victim or her grandparents.

"They are so distraught," Wood said of the grandparents, who have custody of the child. "This is just a horribly tragic accident."
