LARGO - War protesters are using combat boots to remember Florida's fallen soldiers this Memorial Day.
On Monday, 171 pairs of the black footwear will stand on display in Largo, each representing service members who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unless a family member objects, the boots will bear service members' names and hometowns.
One boot will be surrounded by 250 pairs of regular shoes, showing what organizers say is the ratio of American soldier deaths to Iraqi civilian deaths.
Organizer Bettejo Indelicato says he hopes the memorial opens people's eyes to the war and its impact on the nation.
But at least one resident has raised objections about the display. Curtis Holmes says veterans should be honored without what he calls "political" overtures.
