Sen. Edward Kennedy took the helm of his sailboat "Mya" on Monday and rode a stiff southern wind from Nantucket, Mass., back to Hyannis in a regatta just a week after undergoing a brain biopsy that diagnosed him with cancer.
The Massachusetts Democrat made partially good on a pledge from the prior week by competing in the second half of the "Figawi" boat race between the island and Cape Cod. He missed Saturday's outbound leg but got up early on Memorial Day and took a ferry across Nantucket Sound to compete in the return leg.
Also aboard for the more than two-hour journey were his wife, Vicki, Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., and relatives, including sons Patrick and Edward Jr. and stepdaughter Caroline Raclin.
"It couldn't be a more wonderful day," Kennedy told several dozen well-wishers and a handful of reporters who greeted him dockside just down the street from his family's vacation compound.
Kennedy and his wife declined to discuss his upcoming treatment. Doctors are considering using chemotherapy, radiation or a combination to treat the tumor that triggered a seizure on May 17. Treatment could start as early as this week.
Yo Majesty Gets Ybor Club In Action
The female rap duo Yo Majesty took over the stage Saturday at Crowbar in Ybor City.
The Tampa-based emcees, Jewel Baynham (aka Jwl B) and Lashunda Flowers (aka Shunda K), are gearing up to tour Europe to promote their debut album to be released by Domino Records, which is home to Franz Ferdinand, in July. Their sound is a mix of hip-hop, Tampa bass, gospel, rock and whatever else they feel like adding.
"You can expect the unexpected," Baynham said before performing at 2 a.m. "When it comes to two females from the ghetto, we did the thing."
Baynham and Flowers, introduced by a mutual friend in late 2001, are quickly gaining an international fan base. Things are good stateside too with appearances at the highly regarded music festivals Coachella and South-by-Southwest.
"They said we'd never make it," Baynham said. "It's a blessing to be a positive example in Tampa."
McCartney Receives Honorary Doctorate
Paul McCartney can now add one more honor to the numerous awards, accolades and the knighthood he has already received.
The ex-Beatle on Monday was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Yale University.
In granting the honorary degree to McCartney, the university said no one compares with the renowned songwriter.
Yale said the 65-year-old McCartney awakened a generation, giving a fresh sound to rock 'n' roll and to rhythm and blues.
A band played "Hey Jude," a Beatles hit, as McCartney walked onstage to accept the honorary degree.
Yale University President Richard Levin evoked some of the songwriter's most memorable lines. "Here, there and everywhere," Levin said, quoting a line from a Beatles song, "you have pushed the boundaries of the familiar to create new classics. We admire your musical genius and your generous support of worthy causes."
