DUNEDIN - A 47-year-old Largo man was arrested this morning after he struck a man with his sport utility vehicle outside a bar, Pinellas sheriff's authorities said.
Wehner Lawrence Alfons was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and driving with a license suspended or revoked.
The victim, Thomas Paul Stacey Jr., 31, of Dunedin, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for serious head injuries, authorities said.
While on routine patrol, Deputy Jim Cooper saw two men - later identified as Alfons and Stacey - arguing about 2 a.m. outside the Tumbleweeds Bar, 424 Patricia Ave., officials said.
As Cooper drove closer to investigate, he saw Alfons get into a 2002 Suzuki sport utility vehicle with two other people, sheriff's authorities said. The Suzuki backed up and then barreled toward Stacey, hitting him and sending him flying over the front of the vehicle, officials said.
Cooper followed the SUV as it left and pulled it over several blocks away from the bar, officials said. Alfons and the passengers were interviewed.
Alfons said he did not know why he did not stop. He told deputies he did not know what was happening until it was too late.
