Regarding "Facing A Place Far Removed From Mayberry" (Metro, May 18):
As the wife of a 20-year-plus veteran of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, I would like to commend Sheriff Gee for his brutally honest description of the state of our society. In this day and age of "politically correct" and "intelligent policing," sometimes the truth just needs to be put out there for the world to know. In this case the truth is unnerving, yet it invites us to open our eyes to what these men and women face each and every day.
As a wife of a law enforcement officer, I know all too well how this job affects my husband and his partners. Early in our marriage, my naïvete and blissful ignorance protected me for awhile from the wrath of society. But as I watched it take its toll on my husband, as I listened to him tell me "about his day," as I prayed for the children and families destroyed by those who make it their "occupation" to hurt others, "his day" soon became "my day" too.
Thank you to Steve Otto for allowing the sheriff to be vulnerable, to lay it out there about how dangerous society has become and for supporting him and his officers.
