Hurricanes Are Top Seed For NCAA Tournament
The University of Miami was selected as the top seed for the 64-team Division I college baseball tournament.
The Hurricanes (47-8), who won the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament for the first time, will host one of 16 four-team, double-elimination regionals that begin Friday. They open up against Bethune-Cookman (36-20).
The other national seeds, in order, are North Carolina (46-12), Arizona State (45-11), Florida State (48-10), Fullerton (37-19), Rice (42-13), LSU (43-16-1) and Georgia (35-21-1).
The winners of each regional will advance to the super regionals, played June 6-9. The eight winners of the super regionals will play in the College World Series, which starts June 14 in Omaha, Neb.
BASKETBALL: University of Florida forward Jonathan Mitchell, who was named Mr. New York Basketball 2006, will transfer to Rutgers.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-7, 243-pounder, played in 35 games over two seasons at Florida and was a member of its 2007 national championship team. He won't be able to play for the Scarlet Knights until the 2009-2010 season.
LACROSSE: At Foxborough, Mass., Syracuse won its 10th men's lacrosse championship, beating defending champion Johns Hopkins 13-10 behind three goals from Dan Hardy.
The crowd of 48,970 was the largest to see an NCAA championship outdoors in any sport - the BCS football championship game isn't an NCAA event.
