TAMPA - Yankees catcher Jorge Posada is set to take a big step in his rehabilitation program for a sore right shoulder Thursday when he is scheduled to resume throwing to the bases in an extended spring training game.
The five-time All-Star has been sidelined since April 27. Posada, batting .302 with one homer and 11 RBIs in 63 at-bats, hopes to rejoin the Yankees around June 3.
"We'll see," he said. "So far, so good."
Posada played catch in the outfield and threw to the bases during a pregame workout Tuesday before he caught six innings and went 3-for-6 with a double in his second extended spring game.
Four of Posada's at-bats came against injured Phillies pitcher Kris Benson, who has a strained groin. Posada went 2-for-4 against him, with a double that went off the right-field fence.
BREWERS: The team finalized a deal with right-hander Julian Tavarez, who was cut loose by Boston this month after going 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA in nine relief appearances.
DIAMONDBACKS: Left fielder Eric Byrnes was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of sore hamstrings.
INDIANS: Designated hitter Travis Hafner missed a second straight game with a sore right shoulder, and he could be headed for the disabled list.
TIGERS: Gary Sheffield was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an oblique strain on his left side.
Sheffield, who started Monday night's game as the designated hitter, was injured running out a grounder to shortstop in the third inning.
CLEMENS SUIT: Roger Clemens amended his defamation suit against Brian McNamee on Tuesday, adding a new claim of "intentional infliction of emotional distress."
Clemens' attorneys also filed a 39-page response to the motion to dismiss that McNamee's lawyers made on March 4.
