Tampa Bay, I am happy to report that our great chipped beef nightmare is over.
Last week, I included a note in this column from Pennsylvania transplant Larry Farr, who moved to Tampa two years ago.
He loves living here but wishes he could find chipped beef similar to what he used to buy up North to make his favorite dish, creamed chipped beef.
Then Beth Mesa of Tampa came to the rescue.
She e-mailed to say that chipped dried beef can be found at The Amish Country Store at 206 13th St. S.W. in Largo ((727) 587-9657; www.theamishcountry store.com).
"I am also from Pennsylvania and have trouble finding some of my favorite foods," Mesa says.
"The Amish Country Store also has birch beer, pot pie noodles, ring bologna and Cope's corn. Best of luck to Larry!"
For those who plan to make the trip to the Amish store, we've included a Creamed Chipped Beef recipe from Cooks.com and another for Dried Beef Appetizer Pie from our own archive.
Searching For Overnight Cookie
Is it too early to think about Christmas cookies? Not for Pat Ezzell of Zephyrhills.
"Many years ago, the Tribune published a cookie recipe as part of a Christmas cookie article," Ezzell writes. "The cookie used ground walnuts, and the recipe stated that the cookie was better if allowed to sit for a day before eating.
"The cookies never made it to the next day. I lost the recipe a long time back. ... Does anyone have this recipe?"
Maybe Santa will bring it for Father's Day, Pat.
Leftover Requests
Maggie Guerra of Tampa wants the recipe for the Old Meeting House Salad that had lots of white shredded cheese.
Lois Bates of Lakeland is searching for a place to buy lemon-lime Jell-O gelatin mix.
Frances Jennings of Tampa wants the chocolate pie recipe from the now-defunct Toddle House in Tampa.
