TAMPA - A 55-year-old man was arrested today after the 1-year-old boy he was babysitting wandered off about half a mile from home.
The child was found shortly after 2 p.m. at a gas station at the intersection of Thonotosassa and McIntosh roads in east Hillsborough County, deputies said. He was not hurt, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.
Bob Ernest, the man who was taking care of the child, was charged with child neglect, deputies said. The boy's mother was at school and the father was away when the incident happened, deputies said.
Ernest told deputies that he took his eye off the boy for a minute when he slipped away. Ernest is being booked this afternoon at Orient Road Jail.
