ST. PETERSBURG - Firefighter Dave Fraser has put down his ax and picked up the pen. And Newsweek magazine has taken notice.
Fraser has a piece in this week's edition on the travails of turning 50 as a firefighter. It appears in the magazine's "My Turn" section.
"They were nice enough to run it," said Fraser, who works for St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue. "They were nice enough to pay me for it, too."
Fraser received $500 for the article.
Fraser has done some freelance cartoon work in the past but has occasionally written, too.
"I've always been one of those letters-to-the-editor kind of guys," he said. "My wife calls them crackpot letters."
Fraser said he submitted his published piece in February and was told last month it had been selected.
