BREATHING ROOM

A career-best 10th-place finish in Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 has put Zephyrhills' David Reutimann 29th in the all-important owners standings and 26th in the drivers points. The top 35 in owners points get automatic starting berths.

Reutimann would have the same ranking in the owners and drivers points if he hadn't taken over Dale Jarrett's number and sponsor after the first five races. When he did that, he assumed the owners points Jarrett had earned.

"I think this is maybe a start of things to come," Reutimann said of his Charlotte effort. "All in all, our team's coming together, and I can't wait until the next race."

That would be Sunday's 400-miler at Dover, where he had fifth-place finishes in the truck series in 2005 and 2006.
SPRINT CUP ROOKIE RACE
Sam Hornish Jr. is a three-time Indy Racing League champion, but he's trailing Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s Regan Smith in the Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year standings.

It's a pretty good race, though. Here's a look at the standings:

SHE SAID IT

"Sometimes the heat of the moment gets the best of you and you need people that are a little more rational around you that can make better choices." - Danica Patrick, above, on being dissuaded by the IRL's security director and her publicist from confronting Ryan Briscoe during the Indy 500.
