A family cat died in a house fire today in Northdale, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokesman Ray Yeakley said. The fire burned through much of the roof, and damage estimates were set at $110,000.
The fire was reported about 11 a.m. Before fire engines arrived, an off-duty firefighter saw smoke coming from the home on Gardenside Lane, Yeakley said. There had been a report of a person being trapped inside, so the firefighter broke through the front door to search inside the home.
A woman who had been in the home when the fire started had already escaped and was not hurt, Yeakley said.
The same firefighter later took an additional water line off the first engine to arrive and extinguished the fire on the outside of the house while other firefighters went inside to fight the fire.
The fire threatened to spread to a two-story home next door, but firefighter crews had it quickly under control, Yeakley said.
Investigators suspect the fire started outside the home and then spread to the attic, Yeakley said. The investigation is ongoing and a cause has not been determined.
