GRACE IS GONE ***
This John Cusack drama is a somber, intimate and largely nonpartisan reflection on the casualties of war. When his soldier wife dies, Cusack is unable to tell their young daughters that Mom isn't coming home - so he delays the inevitable by taking them on a cross-country road trip to a Florida amusement park instead.
PG-13; 84 minutes
RAMBO *½
Sylvester Stallone is trotting out his other butt-kicking action hero franchise (on the heels of "Rocky Balboa") for another go-round, but you have to give the guy credit for getting on the Burma/Myanmar bandwagon ahead of his Hollywood peers, as the headband-wearing force of vengeance takes on the Burmese Army after they capture a bunch of missionaries.
R; 93 minutes
CASSANDRA'S DREAM **
Woody Allen's downbeat thriller stars Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor as working-class English brothers seduced by dreams of wealth - and willing to take a criminal shortcut to get there. Caveat emptor: the film is less interesting than Allen's similarly themed "Match Point," and there is no Scarlett Johansson to ogle this time around.
PG-13; 108 minutes
CLEANER *
Samuel L. Jackson is an ex-cop who now makes a living cleaning up crime scenes - only his latest job may have been a coverup, since the sexy lady of the house (Eva Mendes) insists she doesn't know anything about a dead body. Renny Harlin directs this noir-ish, "CSI"-influenced procedural with lots of extraneous camera nonsense to match the silly plot twists.
R; 89 minutes
DARFUR NOW
You've listened to the celebrity talking heads, but for those who want to know exactly what is going on in Darfur - and where it is, for that matter - this documentary provides plenty of background, including interviews with victims who have lost their land and families in the genocidal conflict. Don Cheadle and George Clooney lend their star power to the cause.
PG; 99 minutes
THE THREE STOOGES COLLECTION, VOL. 2: 1937-1939
Students of comedy can continue their study of the slapstick antics of Larry, Curly and Moe with this two-disc set featuring two dozen shorts. It's light on extras, but that leaves plenty of room for all the eye-poking fun Stooges fans can stand in such bits as "Grips, Grunts and Groans" and "Oily to Bed, Oily to Rise."
