WESLEY CHAPEL - Sweet! That's the best way to describe a local Girl Scout troop's donation to the Joshua House.
Each cookie-selling season, Troop 500159 from Quail Hollow participates in the Girl Scouts Gift of Caring Program, asking the community to buy Thin Mints, Do-Si-Dos, Trefoils and other varieties to donate to a charity the troop chooses.
This year, Troop 500159 picked Joshua House and delivered 65 boxes of cookies to the emergency shelter for abused, abandoned and neglected children.
The nine Scouts - Jamie Cheney, Heather Coppinger, Sierra Dawson, Tianna Hall, Megan Hoedt, Breanna Sefsick, Savannah Dempsey, Sarah Patrinostro and Taylor Shultz - toured the Tampa-based group home and received their Gift of Caring badges.
After being removed from harmful or unhealthy living situations, the children at Joshua House find a homelike environment where they can feel protected from the troubles they have left behind, the agency said in a statement. Programs at the group home are designed to build self-esteem, teach coping skills, improve educational abilities and meet basic needs of love and trust.
The 11-acre campus, run by the Children's Home Society of Florida, has five ranch-style homes for up to 37 children younger than 16, plus a large play area, basketball courts, jungle gyms and a treehouse.
