ST. PETERSBURG - A man and two teenagers were arrested this morning after they robbed a St. Petersburg Times deliveryman, taking his minivan, and led police on a pursuit, St. Petersburg police say.
The charges against Dontrel Nelson, 20, Resnick Hampton, 16, and Brian Richardson, 17, range from armed carjacking to armed robbery, police spokesman George Kajtsa said.
At 5 a.m. this morning, the Times' deliveryman was approached as he was putting newspapers into the minivan at Fourth Avenue South and Fourth Street, Kajtsa said.
The man was robbed and his white minivan was taken, Kajtsa said.
The suspects were later spotted in a maroon minivan that had also been reportedly stolen, and they were followed from 22nd Avenue North and Fourth Street onto Interstate 275, Kajtsa said.
Once the occupants of the maroon minivan realized a St. Petersburg K-9 officer was following them on the interstate, they bolted, and a sergeant authorized a pursuit, Kajtsa said.
The maroon minivan crashed into a utility pole at 14th Avenue North and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St., and the three were taken in to custody.
