TAMPA - Former Tampa Mayor Dick Greco, who served four terms in city hall, has truly become a fixture of downtown. A statue of Greco, seated on a bench at the southern streetcar terminal in front of the Tampa Marriott Waterside, will be unveiled this afternoon.
Ron Rotella of the Westshore Alliance said the real Greco will be attending the event.
The unveiling of the life-size bronze statue is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The statue, which cost about $43,000, was commissioned by business and civic leaders and friends of the former mayor and was paid for with private contributions. It was designed by Steve Dickey, a Tampa sculptor who has done statues of other Tampa leaders, including former Mayor Nick Nuccio.
A Tampa native and graduate of Hillsborough High School and the University of Tampa, Greco was on the city council from 1963 to 1967, when, at 34, he became one of the youngest mayors of a major U.S. city. He left office in 1974 but returned as mayor in 1995, serving until 2003.
