A Polk County crossing guard is OK after he was hit by a car outside an elementary school in Lake Wales this morning.
About 7:05 a.m., 74-year-old Esaw Brunson stepped out into the crosswalk on Dr. J.A. Wiltshire Avenue near Spook Hill Elementary, Polk County sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers said.
Brunson was hit in the right leg by a car trying to turn left on U.S. Alternate 27. The driver got out of the vehicle to help Brunson, who was later taken to Lake Wales Hospital.
Brunson, who has been a part-time school crossing guard with the Polk County Sheriff's Office since 1996, does not have any broken bones or serious injuries, and he will be released later today after observation, Rodgers said.
Deputies ask drivers to play close attention at school crossings. Drive slowly and obey all traffic signals, and watch for school crossing guards.
