TAMPA - Police on Friday did not release the name of the woman hit by a HART bus Thursday because her relatives haven't been notified.
Detectives think her only family might be in Cuba and notification could take awhile.
About 5:45 p.m. Thursday, the woman stepped off the bus at West Main Street and North Howard Avenue and started walking across Howard just as the bus started to make a right turn.
The bus hit her in the crossing and ran over her, police said. The woman was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital and was pronounced dead.
Police issued a civil citation to the bus driver, William D. LeDuc, 64, of Riverview, for failing to yield the right of way in a pedestrian crossing.
A check of state records shows LeDuc was involved in four automobile accidents since 1998 but was found not at fault in each case.
Personnel records from HART show LeDuc in 2006 received an award for nine years of safe driving on the job.
He also was named "Outstanding Operator Employee of the Month" in August the same year.
