TIERRA VERDE - A sea of pink is expected to wend through Pinellas County this weekend as more than 1,500 people walk in the Tampa Bay Breast Cancer 3-Day Journey.
Participants wearing pink shirts and hats kicked off the 60-mile walk Friday morning at Fort DeSoto Park. They'll walk 20 miles each day, weaving their way through St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island and Redington Shores before ending at Spa Beach, 615 Second Ave. NE, St. Petersburg, on Sunday.
Each walker raised a minimum of $2,200. Eighty-five percent of the proceeds go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure fund for breast cancer research, treatment, education and prevention, the organization says. The remaining 15 percent goes to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund to provide a permanent endowment.
This is the fourth year the Tampa Bay area has held the walk. Last year, the event raised more than $5 million, spokeswoman Sarah Ferguson said.
