Good Tides For Flats Fishing

Published: November 1, 2008

GO FISHING is a look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Rick Grassett.

Action in the coastal Gulf off Sarasota has been hot. Anglers fishing with me on the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, had fast action earlier this week with Spanish mackerel and little tunny on topwater plugs, jigs and flies off Siesta Key.
Spanish mackerel to more than 3 pounds and little tunny to 10 pounds crashed bait schools, providing great sight-fishing opportunities. Several king mackerel skyrocketed on our topwater plugs, and sharks cut some of our fish in half before they could be landed.

Anglers fishing Sarasota Bay with me scored on trout, bluefish and Spanish mackerel along the west side of the bay near Bishop Point and Long Bar on Ultra Hair Clouser flies fished on intermediate fly lines.

Another trip in Charlotte Harbor produced several reds to 23 inches and numerous trout to 18 inches on CAL jigs and DOA Deadly Combos. Action improved later in the day as the water warmed and reds moved onto sand bars in Gasparilla Sound, providing sight-fishing opportunities.

Action in the coastal Gulf should continue during November. Negative low tides this weekend should concentrate reds and trout in potholes and along drop-offs of sand bars and flats. Reds should tail on the shallow grass flats of Gasparilla Sound at the bottom of the tide.
