PLANT CITY - The Florida Strawberry Festival will have a new leader when it opens in about four months.
The festival board has selected Hillsborough County sheriff's Maj. Paul Davis to fill the post left vacant by the retirement of Patsy Brooks. Davis is leaving the sheriff's office at the end of November after more than 31 years.
"The board felt his style of management and proven track record would mesh well with the existing staff," the festival said in a news release.
Davis, the sheriff's special investigations division commander, was already set to retire when the festival opportunity was offered, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. "It was too good to pass up," Carter said.
Brooks, who retired in June, was at the festival 33 years. She started as a secretary and two years later, was promoted to assistant manager, a job she held for 18 years. She occupied the top slot for 13 years.
The festival celebrating the area's top crop is Feb. 26 through March 8.
