Residential Canals Hot

Published: November 2, 2008

GO FISHING is a look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Bill Miller.

Fishing residential canals is a good plan with the recent drop in water temperature. Fishing this week with captains Daryl and James Brown, the "Hooked on Fishing" film crew had lots of action fishing St. Pete docks and canals.

Using live shrimp, white bait and pinfish, we had good action with snook, mangrove snapper, flounder, jacks, ladyfish, small grouper and other assorted species. Live shrimp free lined or on a jig head was working the best that day. The white bait and pinfish probably were moving too fast for the cold and sluggish dock fish.

Captain William Toney reports good redfish and trout action from Homosassa. Redfish are being caught on the rocky areas of the St. Martins Keys on an incoming tide using a small pinfish or live shrimp under a "Homosassa popping cork." Drifting the kelp grass areas off of Ozello and Chassowitzka with DOA Deadly Combinations or a Gulp shrimp on a quarter jig head has been producing limit catches of big keeper trout.

The Skyway flats are a hot spot for redfish. Roger Frakes fishing with captain Dave Markett caught a 43-inch redfish weighing 30 pounds on 8-pound test line. Markett's party also caught many other big bull reds while winning first, second and third in the redfish division of the Tampa Chamber of Commerce Fishing Tournament.

Captain Bill Miller hosts "Hooked on Fishing" on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. on Bright House Sports Networks.
