Published: November 2, 2008

There is no shortage of genealogy lectures in the Central Florida area this month.

Ohio lecturer Jana Broglin will be the featured speaker at the Florida State Genealogical Society's 32nd annual conference in Maitland on Nov. 14-15.

Broglin's lectures will include "Hookers, Crooks and Kooks: Aunt Merle Didn't Run a Boarding House"; "See Ya in the Funnies"; "When Johnny Comes Marching Home - A Borton Family Case Study"; and "Organizing 101 - True Confessions of a 'Pile It.'"

Other speakers on the program include Floridians Ann Bergelt, Pamela J. Cooper, Amy Larner Giroux, George G. Morgan, Donna M. Moughty, Mary P. Parker, Drew Smith and C. Ann Staley.

The Florida Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists will again hold its "Ancestor Road Show" in conjunction with the conference. Once on-site, attendees who have run into obstacles in their research can schedule free consultations with professionals.

The conference takes place at the Sheraton Orlando North in Maitland. Registration for the full conference is $88, and rooms (which can accommodate up to four persons) are $88 per night. For room reservations, call (866) 837-5175.

More information and a registration brochure are available at www.flsgs.org.

Pasco Society Meeting

Pam Treme and Patti Schultz will present a program, "Nurturing the Next Generation of Genealogists," at the Pasco County Genealogical society meeting Saturday.

The group meets at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, 9016 Fort King Road, Dade City. Admission is free. Go to www.roots web.ancestry.com/~flpcgs for information.

Jewish Society Meeting

Treme and Schultz also will present a program on producing holiday newsletters for family and friends at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at the meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay. The group meets at Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services, 14041 Icot Blvd., Clearwater.

Anyone interested in learning how to do Jewish genealogical research is invited to attend this group's meetings. Admission is free. For information on the organization or directions to the meeting, call Linda Zolinsky at (727) 372-0646.

South Bay Society Meeting

I will present the program at the South Bay Genealogical Society November meeting on the 18th. My topic will be "Speaking From the Grave: Exploring Your Ancestor's Probate File."

This group meets at the SouthShore Regional Library, 15816 Beth Shields Way, Ruskin. Lunch is at noon, and the program begins at 1 p.m. Reservations are required. Send a check for $13, payable to the South Bay Genealogical Society, to P.O. Box 5202, Sun City Center FL 33571. The fee for the lunch and lecture must be paid at least seven days prior to the meeting.

Pinellas Annual Seminar

Those planning to attend the February 2009 Seminar sponsored by the Pinellas Genealogy Society should make reservations soon. I understand from seminar chairman Damon Hostetler that seats are limited and selling fast.

That is no surprise, since the featured speaker is Henry Z. "Hank" Jones, one of the most entertaining speakers on the national genealogy circuit. Jones is best known for his research and lectures on the Palatines. One of his topics for this seminar will be "Tracing the Origins of Early 18th Century Palatine & Other Emigrants." His other topics will be "Saints, Sinners & an Occasional Horse Thief: Some Emigrant Stories" and "Genealogy in the New Millennium: Where We've Been and Where We're Going!"

This impressive seminar is set for Feb. 14 at the Jenkins Conference Room of the Largo Public Library, 120 Central Park Drive. Get details and register at www.rootsweb .ancestry.com/~flpgs/ Seminars/sem2009/pgs-2009-seminar-brochure.htm.

UDC Meeting

Sons of the Confederacy member Jack Bolen will present the program "The Southern Cross of Honor" at the November meeting of the Tampa Chapter 113 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The group will meet Saturday at Perkins Restaurant, 12640 N. Dale Mabry, Tampa.

The noon meeting is open to anyone interested in joining the organization. Call June Bolen at (813) 685-4026 for lunch reservations or information. Monday is the deadline for reservations.

Get National Seminar CDs

For those who didn't make the Federation of Genealogical Society conference in Philadelphia in September, recordings of the sessions are available. You can order online at www.jamb-inc.com

A drop-down list will provide the session number from which the lecture can be ordered. The CDs are $12 each, plus $1.50 shipping and handling.

If you are a shut-in and can't travel even to local seminars and meetings, this is a great way to learn the ins and outs of genealogical research.

Reader Obit Tip

In response to a recent column about using obituaries in genealogy research, reader Ron Wooley wrote to caution that some newspapers print only obituaries paid for by the funeral home or the deceased's family. He cited his hometown paper, the Indianapolis Star-News, and pointed out that the names of everyone who dies each day are in the "Death Notices" under the classified section, while only a select few announcements are in the actual obituary section.

If you have information like this on a topic featured in this column, I'd be delighted to hear from you.
