LARGO - A couple was arrested over the weekend on charges they were asleep or nearly passed out in a public park while the two small children in their care were left unattended.
Michael Devecka and Nicole Breault, both 28 and living at 11320 125th Terrace N., were each charged with two counts of child neglect. In addition, Breault was charged with two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the Pinellas sheriff's office.
Devecka was being held at the Pinellas County Jail this morning on $4,000 bail and Breault on $4,300 bail, jail records say.
The couple and two children – their 2-year-old son and 3-year-old niece -- were seen Sunday afternoon at Walsingham Park, 10410 125th St. N., the sheriff's office said. Park patrons grew concerned about the state of the couple and the safety of the children and contacted authorities, the sheriff's office said.
When deputies arrived, they found Devecka and Breault drunk in the vicinity of the playground, unable to supervise the two children, according to the sheriff's office and jail records. Breault was nodding off to sleep, and Devecka was almost passed out, the sheriff's office said.
Breault also had in her possession a plastic straw with a trace of powdery substance on it, along with a pill crusher, arrest affidavits say.
